Homeschooling Benefits
There are many advantages to homeschooling your child! Some homeschooling benefits include more family time and educational flexibility.
Why homeschool?
Choosing to homeschool can be a very difficult decision for your family. However, it can be a very rewarding one! Homeschooling is a decision that needs to be made for your whole family. It’s an educational experience unlike any other that has been on the rise in the past few years.
We began our homeschooling journey when my oldest started second grade. It was the best decision my husband and I could have made for her and our family.
From kindergarten through first grade, my daughter had stomach issues. It crept in slowly which didn’t concern us at the beginning but by the middle of first grade, we were going to specialists to try and solve the problem. After lots of unanswered questions and tests that were coming back normal, we got a diagnosis of “constipation.” When the medication didn’t work, I decided to take things into my own hands. I tried many natural remedies including magnesium and aloe vera juice, which helped her gut issues a lot but did not solve the problem! Why was she still have stomach aches?
You can check out the benefits of drinking aloe vera juice here.
My daughter’s stomach aches at school were constant. By the end of first grade, she was coming home at least once a week with intolerable stomach pain. But you can guess what happened once she got home. That’s right – her stomach pain went away. At that point, I knew the issue was caused more from anxiety than anything else. That lead me down the homeschooling rabbit hole, which I never came out of.
I made the decision that if homeschooling could take away my first grader’s anxiety over schoolwork, I was going to try it! I found that less school-induced anxiety was only one benefit of homeschooling.
Here are some of the benefits I find true and why I advocate for homeschooling.
Educational Flexibility
As a homeschool parent, depending on your state’s laws, you get to choose what curriculum your child is taught, when it is taught, and how it is taught. You can create your own curriculum for certain subject areas or buy a curriculum from a company. There are many homeschool curriculums you can purchase that follow state standards and guidelines. There are also many curriculums you can purchase that include all of the subject areas. However, there are other curriculums you can purchase for individual subject areas if you find you like a certain company for science and a different one for math, for example.
You can find more information on homeschool laws here.
Homeschooling also gives flexibility to your child. Your child now has a say in what they want to learn. How cool is that! My daughter loves being able to choose the next area of study in regard to science. It gives her control over her learning which does not happen in traditional schooling.
Individual Attention
One of the best homeschool benefits, in my opinion, is the individual attention you are able to give to your child. Academically, individual guidance is so critical in a child’s learning. This doesn’t mean you need to give your child all of the answers and help them in every way. However, this is a great opportunity for you to help motivate, encourage, and lead your child in their learning. The growth you will see when your child has your full attention is amazing!
Less Academic Stress
When homeschooling, you have the power to decide how demanding school will be for your child. You do not need to mimic a school day or classroom experience. Homeschooling takes significantly less time in the day than it would at a traditional school. Here is a chart for how long your child should be doing school work in a day based on grade level.
Family Time
A great advantage to homeschooling is the quality family time you get to spend with your child. I heard a quote once that went something like this.
I homeschool not to do school with you, I homeschool so I can do life with you.
If there is one goal I have for homeschooling (among the many I have) it would be to treat each day not as a school day but as a day spent together with my children learning.
Guided Friendships
As a homeschool parent, you are afforded the opportunity to know your child’s friends and their families. A lot of homeschooling families make close family relationships with other homeschooling families. This can be one relief you feel as a parent – knowing who your child hangs out with. At a traditional school, a lot of time you do not know the other students your child is befriending which can leave you a little uneasy. However, having close relationships with your child’s friends and family is another great benefit of homeschooling!
