Wholesome Movies For Families By Season
Finding family-friendly movies can be difficult. Here are some wholesome movies categorized by season to add to your family’s watch list!
Summer
Here is a list of wholesome movies & documentaries you must see this summer!
- Disneynature Elephant
- Disneynature Growing Up Wild
- Dolphin Tale
- Luca
- Finding Nemo
- Little Mermaid
- Rio
- The Parent Trap
- Sandlot
- Nim’s Island
My family doesn’t spend too much time watching tv in the summer but I will normally put on a documentary in the morning if we are waking up slowly. I love that a good documentary will engage the kids, and give educational information, but not overwhelm them. I have found that Disney+ and Netflix have some of the best documentaries. Even our dog gets into the animal and wildlife documentaries!
On occasional summer nights, we will set up a projector outside on our deck and watch a movie outside. This of course requires roasting marshmallows and making smores! The kids think this is the coolest thing in the world. It is pretty awesome until the mosquitos start to come out! Our projector and screen are linked below.
Fall
Here is a list of wholesome movies & documentaries you must see this fall!
- Scooby Doo
- The Hidden Lives of Pets
- Night on Earth
- Monster’s Inc.
- It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
- Halloweentown
- Casper
- Shrek
- CoCo
- E.T.
Halloween movies are so much fun to watch in the fall but there are a few other movies and documentaries I added above that our family loves to watch with popcorn and hot apple cider! There is something so special about watching a movie in the fall, snuggled on the couch with good food.
My kids are still a little young for scary Halloween movies but surprisingly love all of the Harry Potter movies, which I’m not complaining about!
Winter
Here is a list of wholesome movies & documentaries you must see this winter!
- The Star
- Frosty the Snowman
- A Charlie Brown Christmas
- Santa Clause is Comin’ to Town
- Santa Claus 1-3
- Prancer
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
- Klaus
- The Polar Express
- March of the Penguins
- Arctic Tale
- Home Alone
My family loves Christmas movies! You can never go wrong with Home Alone. We rewatch Home Alone every holiday season religiously. At this point, my husband has been burnt out of Home Alone for a few years now but the kids and I can’t get enough. It’s a tradition that we won’t be changing anytime soon.
We also love watching documentaries which make winter break the perfect time to watch them! Winter break is a great time to add in some educational documentaries. Even if you throw on a documentary during playtime or a lazy breakfast, I can guarantee your kids will be learning something they didn’t know before. If your kids aren’t into animal documentaries, there are many about the seasons, oceans, national parks, etc.
Spring
Here is a list of wholesome movies & documentaries you must see this spring!
- Our Planet
- A Bug’s Life
- Mary Poppins
- Christopher Robbin
- Paddington
- Clifford the Big Red Dog
- Bambi
- Peter Rabbit
- Tangled
- Charlotte’s Web
In springtime at our house, we just want to be outside! We don’t watch too many movies this time of year but we do have our favorites for the random family pizza and movie night, which normally happens on a cold and stormy night.
My oldest daughter loved Charlotte’s Web until the movie turned on and she thought Wilbur would die. We had to turn it off and promise to watch it again when she was older. It is still one of my favorites though and such a classic. It is also a great read-aloud book for bedtime.
Movies can bring families together in such a way that I’ve only experienced with board games. We hold on tight to family movie nights and all those movies we have watched in the past. It gives such a great escape from the real world that everyone needs sometimes. I hope your family will enjoy these movies and documentaries as much as my family did.
